Summary
[edit]DescriptionEntrance to the Hall - geograph.org.uk - 995286.jpg |
English: Entrance to the Hall. Waxham Hall is a 12th century manor which by the 16th century was owned by the Calthorpe family and later by the Wodehouses, who built the Hall and its enclosure, presumably before the death of Sir Thomas in 1571. The house was surrounded by a high wall entered through gateways - with tracery in the spandrels > 995305 - which originally extended outwards to include the church. The enclosing wall has polygonal angle buttress shafts which are crowned by finials. (N. Pevsner & B. Wilson, The Buildings of England, Norfolk 1, 2002) |
