Description This is the entrance to the 1894 Grand Opera House in Galveston, TX. The Grand survived the great storm of 1900, which killed over 6000 people in Galveston (and is still the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history); the 1915 storm; Hurricanes Carla and Alicia; and Hurricane Ike, which flooded this part of Galveston Island to a depth of about six feet. The Grand is on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1993 the Texas Legislature proclaimed it the Official Opera House of Texas. It still has a full schedule of performances throughout the year.
