[edit]DescriptionEntrance to South Stand, Withdean Stadium - geograph.org.uk - 1624602.jpg |
English: Entrance to South Stand, Withdean Stadium Temporary home to Brighton & Hove Albion until 2011 when they will finally move into their new stadium at Falmer 14 years after two carpetbaggers breezed into the club for the princely sum of £56.25 promised a new beginning then promptly sold the ground to benefit themselves rather than the club. Two years ground sharing at Gillingham meant a 140 mile round trip for home games until the club returned here in 1999 expecting to stay for a couple of years before moving to a new stadium. Ten years later after protracted planning battles which the club finally won they are now looking forward to moving to their permanent home. Withdean itself is without doubt the worst football ground in the league, one permanent stand joined by five temporary ones, one of which used to head north to the UK Golf open during the summer months, all open to the elements. Surrounded by an athletics track the away fans often need binoculars as the view is so poor. Beyond the turnstiles the bowl that contains the stadium rises containing the Withdean and Westdene Local Nature Reserve currently shrouded in snow which had been falling in the city since the previous evening. |
