Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Entrance to Reading services, westbound Taken from Burghfield Road bridge that crosses the M4 at this point. This is the slip road into the westbound services, being used by the Waitrose lorry. As their depot is in Bracknell, only about 15 kilometres east, this seems a bit early to be stopping. Maybe they have some arrangements here. Reading services filled a long time and long distance (90 kilometres) gap on the M4 between Heston TQ1177 and Membury SU3075. When the M4 was extended beyond junction 8/9 in the 1970s there were plans for a service area in this area. The first application was in 1968, but planning permission was a long time coming, so this service area only opened in 1993. Had it been built earlier it would have been given the local village name Burghfield or Pingewood, but more recently the trend has been to name services after the nearest larger settlement.
