Summary
[edit]DescriptionEntrance passage to the Ardross souterrain - geograph.org.uk - 1333407.jpg |
English: Entrance passage to the Ardross souterrain. This narrow, dark and winding entrance passage to the souterrain is protected by a modern manhole cover - lift it up, and this is what you see. Not having a headtorch, I ventured no further on this occasion. Perhaps another time, as it looks rather interesting. There's a bit more info on this one at [1].
The purpose of souterrains is open to some conjecture, being variously interpreted as animal shelters and storage areas. However the differing construction methods for them, and the fact that some have stone roofs, suggest that they would have been dark, damp and cool (probably downright cold), which implies a likelihood of them being storage for foods rather than living animals in many cases. On the whole, they had some sort of house or building above them, the entrance being in the floor of the building, or in a yard surrounded by several buildings. |
