Description

Sandstones in the Jurassic of Utah, USA. (photo stitch by Mary Ellen St. John)

This is a view of the southern end of Park Avenue in eastern Utah's Arches National Park. The park has the highest concentration of natural arches on Earth. Examples in all stages of development are present. Most form by differential weathering and erosion of relatively thin sandstone fins (= left background).

The colorful rocks are hematite-rich quartzose sandstones and siltstones of the Entrada Sandstone, a Middle Jurassic formation. The cliff-forming unit is the Slickrock Member. The underlying unit (= thinly bedded interval near the bottom of the picture) is the Dewey Bridge Member.
