Title
Entrée principale du palais
Description
Entrance gate of the Palais du Champ-de-Mars, at the 1878 Paris World Fair. The Palais was facing the Trocadéro, and was located on the site where the Eiffel Tower is now standing. The phrase "fluctuat nec mergitur" (meaning: "it is tossed by the waves, but it does not sink") written above the image is the motto of the city of Paris, which was housing the World Fair. The motto was particularly adapted to the 1878 political situation, since France had been through many civil upheavals and wars, and the Third Republic was a very new regime.
