Summary

[edit]
Description Have you ever noticed a suspiciously still fly which seems to be glued to your window? It was probably killed by the fungus Entomophtora muscae. This curious parasite not only infects and kills, but even "zombifies" houseflies for a living. On entering its hosts, the mycellium directs fungal hyphae into the fly’s brain. The infected insect will then show a characteristic set of abnormal behaviours: after crawling upwards as high as possible, it will adopt a distinctive wings-spread, abdomen-up posture, while a glue-like substance is produced in its feet to secure attachment. This is to ensure that the spores, showering from many cracks in the host’s intersegmental membrane, will disperse effectively into the air and find new flies to infect. To worsen things, males approach the infected bodies attracted by their female-like swollen abdomens, getting infected while attempting to copulate and furtherly facilitating the fungus transmission.
