Text Appearing Before Image:
inthe female (G) of Phanccus carnifcx and absent in the male(H), and absent in both sexes of Deltochilnin. Thoughfemales of Phanccus lose their front tarsi by digging, the de-generate condition of these organs cannot be attributed to theinheritance of a mutilation, but may have been brought aboutby disuse; though no one has explained why the two sexesshould differ in this respect. )\Iany insects use the legs toclean the antennae, head, mouth parts, wings or legs; the honeybee (with other bees, also ants, Carabidae, etc.) has a specialantenna-cleaner on the front legs (Fig. 263, D), which isdescribed, with other interesting modifications of the legs, onpage 271. Indeed, the legs serve many such minor purposes in addi-tion to locomotion. They are generally used to hold thefemale during coition, and in several genera of Dytiscidae(Dytiscits, Cybister) the male (Fig. 62, /) has tarsal disks andcupules, chiefly on the front tarsi, for this purpose. Among ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY 53 Fig. 62.

Other secondary sexual peculiarities of the legs may be men-tioned the tibial brushes of the male Caiocala conciunhens, regarded as scent organs, and the cjueer appendages of male Dolichopodidse that dangle in theair as these flies perform theirdances. The pulvillus is commonly anadhesive organ. In flies it hasglandular hairs that enable the in-sects to walk on smooth surfacesand to walk upside down; so alsoin many beetles and notably in thehoney bee (Fig. 63) ; in this insectthe pulvillus is released rapidlyfrom the surfac
