English: Ensemble, bodice and skirt, day dress circa 1895; .1 bodice; assymmetrical side front opening (proper left); front decorated with three diagonal dark green strips of 40mm wide velvet; bottom edge of bodice trimmed in same velvet finished with bow at lower left opening; bodice mounted onto dark brown silk taffeta; high stand collar 77mm wide cut on bias and finished with applied bow in self fabric, fastening centre back with two hooks and eyes; front underpiece fastens to right froper with seventeen hooks and eyes, all extant, concealed by assymmetrical overpiece, fastening at side seam, over the shoulder and at centre back neck; front bodice consists of two panels with darts, back bodice consists of four panels; 12 bones, padded bust area; sleeves cut very full and in one piece, trimmed with green velvet triangular cuffs; inside waistband bears maker's label and is fastened with hook and eye. .2 skirt; seven gores; flat front with fullness at back, cartrige pleats at waist; centre back opening, fastened at waist with two hooks and eyes; skirt is plain with no trimmings; mounted onto dark brown silk taffeta; skirt also seems to be interlined; one large pocket in side back seam; inside construction of two sets of tapes at back controlling fullness; first set of two pairs of adjustable (tied) brown cotton tapes attached to side seams with a 70mm length of black elastic; second set of two fixed black tapes 75mm long set lower down on the inside of the skirt; hem is protected with 18mm wide brush tape overlaid with 105mm wide brown taffeta scalloped and pinked ruffle. |
