Summary

[edit]
Description Native warm-season annual or short-lived perennial slender tufted C4 grass usually 20-30 cm tall (to 50 cm); stem nodes are hairy. Leaves are hairless to hairy and 1-3 mm wide. Flowerheads are spike-like to narrow panicles 1-10 cm long. Spikelets are 3-6-flowered; glumes are 7–15-nerved; each lemma has 9 awns; lowest lemma is thickened and its nerves are not or only partly ribbed (but sometimes obvious because of their colour). Flowers during the warmer months. More commonly found on red earths in undulating or hilly woodland or open forest; often in rock crevices; occasionally in grasslands. Native biodiversity. Plants usually occur at low density and produce little feed for livestock. Forage value is reasonable while actively growing but poor when mature. Tolerates moderate grazing pressure, but can decline if continuously grazed.
