Diirers contemporary, Lucas Cranach the elder (born at 112 ENGRAVING IN GERMANY (1527—1000) Kronach in 1472, worked principally at Wittenberg, diedat Weimar in 1553), had far less importance as an engraverthan as a painter, and designer of woodcuts. Yet,particularly in his early days, he executed some highlyoriginal and pleasing engravings.
