Summary

[edit]
Description

c/n 95001 Built 1954 The P.1 was an experimental aircraft which would be the forerunner of the supersonic Lightning fighter. During early testing WG760 became the first British aircraft to break the sound barrier in level flight. She operated from A&AEE Boscombe Down, RAE Bedford and also from Warton until she was retired from flying in 1961. Between 1962 and 1966 she was used as a ground instruction airframe, before going on display on the parade ground at RAF Henlow alongside sister P.1 WG763. In 1982 she was taken to RAF Binbrook and restored, before moving to Cosford in early 1986. She has remained on display at Cosford ever since and is currently in the ‘Test Flight’ hangar. RAF Museum, Cosford, Shropshire, UK.
