The old yokes, rails, slot andcable duct had, ot course, to be torn out;the new trolley road track consisted of tackle, and the manner of operating it, withihe electrically operated derrick car. Theaction was, as will be sSen, to tear loosethe yokes and break down tlie sides of thecable conduit without disturbing the bottomconcrete. When the yokes had been brokenloose as described, the lifting lever wasunslung and the derrick hook was attachedto the yokes one at a time, and they werepulled clear of the concrete and depositedto one side. .\s a rule the yokes pulledout clean, but when lumps of the concreteremained attached they were easily brokenloose by a few blows from a sledge whilethe yoke was suspended. For ballast it was plannedto recrush. the concrete taken out of theold cable road and so far as possible not todisturb the old concrete forming the bot-tom of the cable conduit, but to have it as afoiuidation for the ballast. The mode otprnceednre was as follows : The pavement was first removed the fullwidth of the roadbed and the track railsand slot rails were cut loose by chiseling offthe bolt heads with flogging chisels. Atrench about 18 ins. deep was excavated oneach side of the track and the ends of theyokes laid bare by cleaning oflf the concretewith steel gads and hammers. This wasto permit a hoisting chain or link to becaught under the yoke ends. Figure Ishows the arrangement of the hoisting street.
