Com o pronunciamento militar de 1974, o governo provisório incorporou o turismo na Secretaria de Estado do Comércio Externo e Turismo e esta na dependência do Ministério da Coordenação Económica. Em 1976, criou-se o Ministério do Comércio e Turismo, com uma Secretaria de Estado do Turismo, onde se integrou a DTM. Nesse ano, a Madeira passou a ter órgãos autónomos, tornando-se na Região Autónoma da Madeira (RAM) e, face à importância do sector do turismo, o presidente da DTM, então o Eng.º José dos Santos Ribeiro de Andrade (1912-1998) integrou a Junta Governativa e de Desenvolvimento Regional da Madeira, que tomou posse em São Lourenço, a 20 de fevereiro desse ano de 1976. Em 1978, transferidas as competências da gestão turística para a RAM, ficou a DTM sob a dependência da Secretaria Regional da Economia, mas mantendo o mesmo titular, que só se aposentou em 1982. Em 1979, extinta a DTM, sucedeu-lhe a Direção Regional de Turismo, que anexou em 1985 a Direção Regional da Cultura, até então na área da Educação, formando a Secretaria Regional de Turismo e Cultura, mas mantendo a sua sede no mesmo edifício de 1940, sensivelmente, onde funcionara o consulado de Reino Unido e que, com a construção em 1948 para 1949 de novo edifício sobre o Jardim Municipal, passou para o mesmo, tendo a DTM passado a ali funcionar.
