Summary

[edit]
Description

This building near the Port of Longyearbyen is home to Energiverket, the coal driven power plant which produces all the electricity in Longyear City. It used to get coal from nearby mines but today the coal is sent by trucks from coal mine 7 (Gruve 7) about 15 km (10 mi) up the Adventdalen valley.

Because Svalbard is very remote from mainland Norway, with no possibility of hydroelectric or solar power (it's dark for 4 months of the year), coal remains the only viable option to generate local electricity. But the power plant is old, using about 25 000 tons of coal annually it produces 41 000 MWh of electric power, barely keeping up with the demands of a growing population, so a new plant is badly needed. It also generates about 70 000 MWh of "waste heat", which is sent out as hot water to heat up private homes and businesses in Longyearbyen.
