Description Ornamental carved stone label mould by Mawer and Ingle on the exterior of Endcliffe Hall, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. The building was designed by Flockton and Abbot for Sir John Brown (1816-1896), and erected 1863-1865. This artwork features a bird preening itself. At the same time it shows a corn cob (or similar item) which is thinly veiled by a gossamer-like dragon's wing. This is highly-skilled trompe l'oeil work, since it is made of stone. So the preening bird may represent the sculptor's pride in his achievement (probably William Ingle who specialised in carving vegetation and animals).
