ofhieroglyphic characters.^ The discovery of the Rosetta stone,with its three inscriptions, of whichone consists of hieroglyphic characters,the second of the Enchoria Grammata, orletters of the country, and the third ofGreek, led a Swedish diplomatist, M.Akerblad, to conclude that there wasan alphabetical system composed oftwenty-five letters only; but such analphabet never existed: on the con-trary, there were intermixed numerouscharacters, which were obviously im-perfect imitations of the more intelli-gible pictures that were observableamong the distinct hieroglyphics ofthe first inscription, such as a priest, astatue, and a mattock or plough, whichwere evidently, in their primitive state,delineations of the objects intended tobe denoted by them, and which wereas evidently introduced among theenchorial characters.* The preambleof the decree consisting, however, in a h YoUBg, 7. 9,13.
