This accenfion of pyrites is by many fuppofedto be the true origin of the volcanic fire j and an ar-gument for this is, that the prefent volcanoes do pourforth great quantities of the component parts of py-rites, particularly fulphur, iron, and clay. Now, 9-mong the fuperinduced fubftances of the county ofAntrim, and the fame may probably be faid of everyother bafaltic country, it is certain that the quantityof iron and clay difiufed through almoft every fpeciesof folBl, amounts to mor<: than one-half of the wholematerial; fo that two of the principal elements of thepyrites are ftill foimd there, reduced in many inflances to BASAJLTE S. Plate XCm.
