Description

Every once in a while, I ride past our natural gas fired power plant in Bellingham. On the waterfront off South Cornwall Avenue.

It's not used very often, mostly used when the Pacific Northwest grid needs extra power, like when some big generator is off line or during certain peak demand times. For some reason, it was running just a few days ago. One can usually tell when it's running as steam boils up from the cooling fans.

Back in the days of Georgia Pacific pulp and paper mill, this plant was designed as a co-generation facility. It was built so Georgia Pacific could use it's waste steam and hot water to get more bang for the buck. Now that GP is no longer there, the power plant is not used that often. No one to use the waste heat in the original plan. After GP closed, this power plant did put in a waste heat steam turbine to recoup some of that heat.

Maybe, someday, it can be used to help heat our new waterfront development; if they ever get around to building something where Georgia Pacific was.

Main technology, in this power plant, is natural gas fired turbines. Heat from their exhaust can be recouped into steam. Large boiler like structures, on the west side of that plant (away from the street) are used to remove heat from the exhaust as it comes out of the natural gas turbines. Then the steam goes to a steam turbine and cooling tower, now that GP is no longer there.
