Title
Enamelled trumpet brooch fragment - trumpet and head stud
Description
English: Roman brooch; Cast copper alloy trumpet-headed brooch fragment decorated with enamel – trumpet and part of bow only. Dated to the 2nd century. The fragment consists of a flared trumpet from the head of the brooch which narrows and curves upwards to the bow of the brooch. The trumpet is hollow on the back, where it would have originally held the spring or hinge mechanism for the pin of the brooch. There is an indication that the brooch originally had some form of extension or loop above the trumpet; the remains of this are still present, although the remaining part of this extension is too small to determine its form or function. The bow is in the form of a broad, flat, circular plate with a large ring and dot in relief, inlaid with red enamel between the ring and the dot. There is also a band of blue enamel around the outer edge of the ring. The fragment is broken off across the bottom edge of this band of blue enamel.

Length 27.2mm, width (trumpet) 13.2mm, width (bow) 13.0mm, thickness (bow) 3.7mm, weight 4.85g
