Title
Enamelled dolphin brooch fragment - head and wings
Description
English: Roman brooch; Cast copper alloy enamelled headstud brooch fragment – bow and parts of both wings only. Dated to the 2nd century. Brooch has broad, flattened wings with a high-arching bow which tapers towards the foot. This fragment consists of the bow and the start of both wings. The wings have cast relief decoration in the form of a zig-zag band next to the start of the bow. The resultant triangles of this band are inlaid with red or white enamel. The pattern is the same on both wings, making them symmetrical. The bow has a rectangular cross section between the wings. There is a thin, rounded ridge running along the first part of the bow. This ends in a small, oval stud inlaid with white enamel or paste. Below this stud the bow becomes rounded in cross section as it tapers towards the foot. The remains of the iron pin can be seen on the back of the wings. Dated to the first or second centuries

Length 29.9mm, width (wings) 23.0mm, thickness (at head stud) 6.1mm, weight 12.24g
