Title |
Enamelled Medieval horse harness pendant |
||
Description |
English: Enamelled copper alloy horse harness pendant. The pendant is shield shaped and has a chevron dividing the field. Above and below are three crosslets set on a background of red enamel. The copper alloy has been silvered. There is a small suspension loop at the top.
Ms Irene Szymanski kindly supplied the following information: The condition of the pendant (lacking the colour of the chevron and the crosses crosslet, unless the traces of white are silvering rather than corrosion?) means that I can suggest a selection of names, but not choose between them; there is also the problem of whether the chevron is supposed to be between six crosses or on a background sprinkled with crosses. Only the second option produces any results, so I shall assume that is the case. Assuming that the missing portions were gold, the blazon would be "gules crusily and a chevron or", and a likely owner would be Philip de Kyme of Sotby, Lincs; his father held lands at Kyme in Kesteven. Philip was summoned to serve against the Welsh in 1277, 1284 and 1294, and against the Scots from 1298 on several occasions. He died in 1323, leaving his son William as his heir; the latter died in 1338 without issue, his sister Lucy inheriting.Assuming that the missing portions were silver, the blazon would be "gules crusily and a chevron argent", and a likely owner would be Thomas Berkeley or Maurice Berkeley. Thomas de Berkeley of Berkeley, Gloucester, heir of Maurice de Berkeley (d. 1281). Fought against the Welsh, the Scots, and the French, ambassador to France, 1296, vice-constable of England, 1297, ambassador to pope Clement V, 1307, died 1321, leaving a son and heir, Maurice. Thomas' effigy is in Bristol Cathedral. Maurice de Berkeley held several important posts while his father was still living; fought against Edward II at Boroughbridge in 1322, but surrendered, dying in 1326, leaving a son and heir Thomas, who used different arms. Maurice was warden of Berwick, 1315, whence his seal is known; his armorial effigy is in Bristol Cathedral. |
