Place of creation Rørbye drew a watercolour in his sketchbook during his stay, which forms the basis for the oil painting. That one reproduced p. 29 in the travel journal. In addition, he made several sketches of public life, which he observed in the bustle of the various marketplaces he visited.
Object history
  • The painting was disposed of by lottery and won by Major Cathala.
  • Wine merchant Sandberg.
  • 1871 sold to Councillor of State Broberg. Councellor Carl Reisz, his widow Mrs Reisz (1905).
  • Sold at Bruun-Rasmussen Auctions on May 29, 2018 for DKK 1,325,000 (EUR 175,000) (Lot 879/221).
Exhibition history Charlottenborg 1831 no. 59. An etching was made after the painting, which was distributed among the members of Kunstforeningen (the Art Association).
