Summary
[edit]DescriptionEmpire Building lettering, Syracuse, New York - 20210221.jpg |
English: Signage above the entrance to the Empire Building, 472 South Salina Street, Syracuse, New York, as seen in February 2021. A snazzy seven-story Neoclassical edifice built in 1910 and originally known as the Gurney Building, the elegantly detailed bottom two stories of the building were replaced with a modernist façade during an unfortunate early-1980s renovation. What's seen here is the result of a subsequent 2017 renovation that aimed to restore a degree of architectural integrity to the design and in so doing added some throwback Art Deco-flavored elements to the aesthetic: not only the lettering of the sign and building number but also the stylized pilaster strips framing the doorway as seen here, which reappear in pairs interspersed between trios of second-floor windows. |
