[edit]DescriptionEmerald Lake or Toad Lake near Bellingham (35545399554).jpg |
Since moving to Bellingham, many years ago, I've never been to Toad Lake. Today, I decided to bike there. Not that far, but (as I figured) a good workout. Up lots of steep hills. Back in the late 1970s, one of my college professors talked about some developer who wanted to change the name from Toad Lake to Emerald Lake. The new name didn't stick. Toad Lake is more authentic. Emerald is more "fantasy marketing," I guess. There is Emerald Lake Way. Part of the reason why I never went there, was that I thought it would all be private property around the lake. Then, a few weeks ago, someone told me there is a public dock. I found that dock, but couldn't figure out any way to get to the dock on my first ride out there. Later people responded to my posts on Facebook and I learned about the other road. Along Britton Road, about 1/2 mile south of Emerald Lake Way, is a road called Hillsdale. That goes to Toad Lake Road which ends at the public access. It was a fun adventure biking up there and around the lake. Also quite a view out over the city, not from the lake, but from roads leading there. |
