Description
English: Elves and the Shoemaker

Record number: 23061401 Artist: Kubel, Otto (German, 1868-1951) Item caption, front: Brüder Grimm / Die Heinzelmännchen / Otto Kubel, pinx. Item caption/descriptive text, back: 6. = Every night four little naked men made new shoes for the poor shoemaker, which made him rich. In thanks, his wife put a shirt, coat, jerkin and pantaloons on the table for each little man. When the little men found their new clothes that evening, they jumped for joy, but never came back thereafter. Uniform title: Grimm: Die Wichtelmänner (“The Elves and the Shoemaker”) Dimensions: 139 x 89 mm. Date: ca. mid-1920s or earlier Nationality: German Publisher: Verlag: Farbenphotographische Gesellschaft m.b.H., Stuttgart, [Germany] Series: Serie 173 Nr. 3993 Medium: Uvachrom color print from original watercolor painting Interpretive notes: The illustrator or publisher seem to have conflated the Grimm Brothers' tale of "Die Wichtelmänner" (“The Elves and the Shoemaker”) with the title of August Kopisch's poem about the elves (or brownies) of Köln (Cologne). The latter does not mention the little folk helping a poor shoemaker, while the Grimm's tale describes only two elves. In other details, however, the illustration conforms to the conclusion of the Grimm Bothers' tale: the shoemaker and his wife, wanting to thank the little men for their help, provide them with custom-made clothing, and secretly observe the delight of their small helpers as they try on their gifts. Subject headings: Elves
