[edit]DescriptionEllwood Hotel (Santa Barbara, California).jpg |
English: The Ellwood Hotel at the southwest corner of State and Anapamu streets. One of the early brick buildings in Santa Barbara it was designed in 1873 by architect Peter J. Barber (1830-1905) to serve as the Santa Barbara College. The college closed in 1882 and the building taken over by the major stockholder, Col. William Welles Hollister. It was remodeled and opened in 1883 as the Ellwood Hotel, taking its name from Ellwood Cooper, the former head of the college. In late 1886 it was renamed the San Marcos Hotel. It was demolished in 1913 to make way for a modern four-story building, the San Marcos Building. The tall steeple showing behind the hotel is the Presbyterian church (1875) also designed by Peter J. Barber. |
