Summary
[edit]DescriptionEllicott Creek Trailway - 20230404 - 27 - Trailway past Amherst Memorial Hill Grove.jpg |
English: As seen on an April 2023 afternoon, the Ellicott Creek Trailway in Amherst, New York winds alongside the Amherst Memorial Hill Grove. Among the earliest memorials to have been dedicated in the aftermath of the heinous terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the history of the grove began the following October 20 with the planting of a single oak tree (a species that, according to organizers, "has been immortalized through the ages for its images of unwavering strength and majesty") in honor of the victims and those who selflessly assisted in the recovery. The tree is set on a low hill next to a towering American flag in the center of a circular stone plaza which, in turn, is surrounded by a concrete walkway in the shape of a remembrance ribbon. Over the following year, through the generosity of local donors, funding was collected for the planting of several dozen more trees, which ring the stone plaza and "stand individually, representative of the many individual races, cultures and religions throughout America that thrive side-by-side in peace. As they mature, their roots and branches intertwine, becoming one living structure, exhibiting the strength and unity that is the hallmark of this great nation". The completed grove was rededicated in September 2002 on the first anniversary of the attacks, and it today remains a place of solemn reflection but also inspiration. The original portion of the Trailway itself opened to cyclists and pedestrians in 1988, and runs from Ellicott Creek Trailway Park on North Forest Road, through the North Campus of the University at Buffalo and the sprawling Audubon Industrial Park, before ending at Ellicott Creek Park in nearby Tonawanda; a distance of 4.4 miles in all. A southward extension of the path, leading to the Audubon Recreation Complex on Amherst Manor Road, added 2.2 miles to the total length when it opened in May 2000. |
