Summary

[edit]
Description
English: As seen in April 2023, the Ellicott Creek Trailway in Amherst, New York passes alongside the University at Buffalo's gargantuan Solar Stroll. Completed in 2021 and so named for its location next to the Trailway, this is the largest of five ground-mounted solar arrays built by UB in partnership with Solar Liberty, a locally-based installation firm, as part of the school's Climate Action Plan. It comprises nearly 17,000 individual solar panels spread over an area of nearly 25 acres, with a generating capacity of about 8.3 million kWh per year, or about enough to offset 1,350 homes. The intention is for these solar farms to eventually fulfill the entirety of UB's electricity necessities. The original portion of the Trailway itself opened to cyclists and pedestrians in 1988, and runs from Ellicott Creek Trailway Park on North Forest Road, through the North Campus of the University at Buffalo and the sprawling Audubon Industrial Park, before ending at Ellicott Creek Park in nearby Tonawanda; a distance of 4.4 miles in all. A southward extension of the path, leading to the Audubon Recreation Complex on Amherst Manor Road, added 2.2 miles to the total length when it opened in May 2000.
