Description
English: The Elks Lodge is a Modesto City Historic Landmark, and is recognized by the city's Landmark Preservation Commission. The Elks Lodge is located on 1222 I Street in Modesto, California. The building was completed in 1927. It was built for the Modesto Lodge No. 1282 of the Brotherhood of the Protective Order of Elks. The basement had once held a boxing ring that was donated and dedicated by World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Jack Dempsey. In 1950 the building was sold to the Cannery Workers Union, Local 948 of the International Teamsters Union.
