Eleanor Roosevelt's friends Elizabeth Read and Esther Lape. Elizabeth Fisher Read (1872-1943) was Eleanor’s personal attorney, financial advisor, and political and feminist mentor. Esther Lape (1881-1981) was well known as a journalist, researcher, and publicist. Lape was also associated with the Women's Trade Union League and one of the founders of the League of Women Voters. Eleanor credited Read and her life partner Esther Lape with playing a key role in her education as a political activist. The two women also formed the nucleus of what eventually became Eleanor’s support network of women devoted both to her and to the causes she supported.
