Description

Portrait painting titled Eliza Darnbrough, Sister of the Reverend John Whitton Darnbrough by Anon, at the Mercer Art Gallery, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England.

Date anomaly: This sitter looks no more than 15 years old. Moreover, Eliza's brother John Whitton Darnbrough was born in 1823, so this is very likely to be a 19th-century painting even if she were 20 years younger than her brother. Also the style and condition of the painting indicate a 19th-century date. However ArtUk gives a date of mid-20th century, which must be wrong.
