Deutsch: "Elisabeth Amalie war eine Tochter des Landgrafen Georg II. von Hessen-Darmstadt (1605–1661) aus dessen Ehe mit Sophie Eleonore (1609–1671 von Sachsen. Elisabeth Amalie galt als Prinzessin von einnehmendem Äußeren mit auffallend blonden Haaren, die sie bis ins hohe Alter behalten haben soll. Am 3. September 1653 heiratete Elisabeth Amalie den 20 Jahre älteren nachmaligen Kurfürsten Philipp Wilhelm von der Pfalz. Das Porträt zeigt sie als Witwe. Der Kurfürst war 1690 gestorben. Sie trägt einen schwarzen Schleier über den weißblonden Haaren. Das dunkelbraun bis schwarze Obergewand zeigt einen Perlenbesatz mit Perlenagraffe und darunter eine Perlenschließe. Auch die Halskette besteht aus großen Perlen; über dem linken Unterarm zeigt sich ein herabgeglittener, bläulich schimmernder Umhang.

Jan van Douwen wurde 1682 am Düsseldorfer Hof von Philipp Wilhelm als Hofmaler angestellt. Seit 1691 hatte er als „Cabinetsmaler“ die ranghöchste Stellung am Hof inne. Er porträtierte viele bekannte Persönlichkeiten seiner Zeit." [1]
