Description

Eliot Ness, the famous Chicago Prohibition agent, lived in this house with his parents on Prairie Street. Ness, a 20-year old University of Chicago student, lived right down the street from Al Capone who in 1923 also bought a house north on the same street. Ness moved out in 1928 and would marry a year later.

In 1928 he was transferred to the Justice Department to work for the Prohibition Bureau. A couple of years later he formed a special squad dedicated to taking down Al Capone. The press dubbed them The Untouchables because they would accept no bribes. They began raids against Capone's illegal stills & breweries in 1931, destroying $500,000 in property and causing Big Al to lose $9 million in revenue.

Capone was sentenced to prison for tax evasion in 1931. Capone was escorted by Ness from jail to a train headed for penetentiary in Atlanta. It was the only time the two ever met in person.

After Prohibition Ness was transferred to the "Moonshine Mountains," ending up in Cleveland in 1934. He died of a heart attack in Pennsylvania in 1957.
