it there are several important springs. One of these is called thePavilion Spring. Pavilion Spring.—It has been walled up and a pavilion erected; it isclose to the creek and is rather agreeable in taste; considerable gasescapes, and the basin is hned with iron oxide; the temperature was52° F., with the air at 82° F. In the creek opposite the spring thereare several points from which gas escapes through the water, and abovethe Pavilion there are several small springs. What will attract noticefirst here, however, are the cone-like mounds west of the town. These,in 1871, were called Pyramid Springs and Bluff Springs, and I shallretain the names in the description. Pyramid Springs.—The mound on which these springs are located hasbeen built layer by layer from the sediment left by the evaporation ofthe water as it has poured over the sides from the springs. There is aspring on the summit from which water is run into a tank to supply * Report U. S. Geol. Survey for 1872,1873, p. 173.

Below the summit there aretwo springs; one of them is about two feet in diameter and gives offconsiderable gas. There are besides several small holes, in which thewater is, for the most part, perfectly quiet. The temperatures were thesame in all the springs, viz, 80°, with the air at 74°. At the south end of the mound there are springs in which the follow-ing temperatures were noted: No. 1, 81° F.; No. 2, 80° F.; with the airatS5°. There are also several small places from which water trickles. These springs are all exposed to the direct rays of the sun. Bluff Spring.—This spring is situated on a mound similar to the onejust described. The water has been used for bathing purposes, but thebath-houses have been destroyed.
