Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Elephanta Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a collection of 6th century Hindu cave temples predominantly dedicated to its god Shiva. They are located on Elephanta Island, or Gharapuri (literally "the city of caves") in Mumbai Harbor, Maharashtra.

This is the plan of cave 2 and 3 according to Burgess (but Caves 3 and 4 according to modern numbering). The square cells are likely Hindu monasteries or pilgrim rest facilities.

Photograph rights: The plan was published in 1883 by James Burgess (died 1892). The above image is a photograph from a personal copy of the published book in 1883,. PD-Art-100-70 guidelines apply, and any rights I have are herewith donated to wikimedia commons with Creative Commons 4.0 license.
