bowl calenderdriven by strap with top metal bowl, and arrangedfor heating by steam. Above are regulating pressurescrews, at bottom levers are fixed. Behind thecalender either a plaiter down or batching-roller isapplied. The top bowl is furnished with a cog-wheel which may be dispensed with if desired forordinary finishes when worked in conjunction withthe intermediate wheel friction is obtained. When the goods are to be specially glazed,the 4 bowl universal calender shewn in fig. 91,p. 237, is employed. This machine has an iron bottom bowl, twocotton or paper bowls and one chilled iron frictionbowl. The latter is arranged to be heated by steamor gas, and the intermediate friction wheel can beeasily taken out of gear, so that the machinemay be used either as a friction or as a swizzingcalender. A Stanley or lubricating roller is providedto keep the friction bowl clean, and a set ofchasing rollers are applied so that the calender FINISHING IN GENERAL. MACHINES EMPLOYED IN FINISHING. 237
