Text Appearing Before Image:
entre is perpendicular, thetwo others at the extremity are placed in anoblique position. In the circumference of thesepulleys are enclosed sectors, parallel to the axis;they are movable and work by means of groovesplaced underneath. When the axle, provided witha pulley, is put in motion, the sectors are carriedalong and forced to describe the ellipsis, formedby the pulleys placed in a slanting position. Thesesectional expanding pulleys in revolving arrive ata maximum distance apart and then at a minimumdistance apart. — In using this stretcher, which, from what we have just seen, only acts on thehalf of its circumference, it must be placed so thatthe piece enters at the minimum point of theopening of the sectors, that is, at the point wherethe extreme pulleys come nearest together, andgoes out at the maximum point, that is the pointwhere the pulleys are farthest apart. Another stretcher, based on the same prin-ciple, but the movement of which is modified, is 17H FINISHING IN GENERAL.

Fig. 4o. Conical expanding rollers as applied to a cylinder drying machine. MACHINES EMPLOYED IN FINISHING. 177 that represented fig. 49, page 178. Plate 16,page 107, shews its position between the starchingmachine and the drums. Instead of having a movable axle, we havehere a fixed one, on which two movable eccentricsare fitted. They are united at the top by a screwwhich permits the expanding to be modified byregulating the working of the sectors. If the ec-centrics are placed perpendicularly to the axle, the sectors will turn simply like the woodenstaves of a wince, but if by the screw placed atthe top, we displace the eccentrics, a to and fromotion will be given to the sectors. The piece, which rubs on the surface of the sectors, promotesthis movement, and to facilitate the adherence ofthe cloth, the sectors are jagged like a saw. This stretcher is excellent in finishing machines, and is one of those most generally used at thepresent day. Hesfords machine is very similar tothe precedi
