Nematoda, or round worms. Thecommon parasites are : (i) The Ascavis megalocephala (Ascaris lumhvi-coides)^ a large round white worm, varying from 7 to 16 inches long,found in the stomach and small intestine. It is also common to theass and mule. (2) Oxyuvis covvula^ a small curved worm, from i^ to 2 inches long, thick and curved at the front, with a fine pointed tail,found in the large intestine, and generally known as the maw-wovm. (3) The StvongyUis annatus, or armed strongyle, a straight worm,in length from i to 2 inches, although mostly found coiled upin the walls of the large intestine—cacum and colon—and in theintestinal canal, it is also found in the bloodvessels, scrotum, etc.,and is one of the most numerous of the parasites found in the horse, (4) Stfongylus tetracanthus, a spindle-shaped worm, varying in size upto i-; inches in length, and found embedded in the mucous membraneof the intestinal canal (Plate XIX,). 253. THE DIGESTIVE ORGANS 157 be present in large quantities in the alimentary canal without causingany disturbance or derangement to the system, and without anyexternal sign to denote their presence ; but when really verynumerous they cause great emaciation, particularly during the winterand early spring months, when the following symptoms may benoticed : Staring coat, irregular appetite, dulness, languor, legstrailed on moving, belly tucked up, with occasional diarrhoea, and agreat loss of flesh. If, on examination, nothing can be found toaccount for the poor anaemic condition of the horse, it may be con-cluded that worms are the cause, more particularly if the animal hasbeen out grazing on an unsound pasture, or if the autumn monthshave been wet. Tape-worms are rarely found in the horse.Treatment.—Two ounces of turpentine mixed with i pint of linseedoil can be given every seventh or eighth day until four doses aregiven, and in the interval give every other night in the food onetablesp
