Where direct current ofnot less than 40 volts and not more than 220 is available, these cellswill be charged through lami)s by means of the charging panel,figure 18, shown in Chapter II. Where only alternating current is available a special motor gen-erator and ))anel will be provided. The motor side will be built tomeet the characteristics of the i:)Ower circuit, and to that end a requi-sition for this machine should always state the voltage, number ofphases, and frequency of the alternating power current available. 180 ELECTRICAL INSTRUMENTS U. S. SIGNAL CORPS. Figure 108 illustrates an ideal installation of the central officeai)paratus where direct current is available. A detail drawing of thecharging j)anel shown is given in figure 18, chapter TI. These i^anels are intended for installation at about 18 inches fromthe wall, as indicated on the figures. The leads from the switch-jjoards and the post power should be brought up from the floor inloricated conduit fastened to the wall, e\en with the bottom of thepanel; from this point the lead sheath is removed and the wires arecarried over to the connecting lugs on the rear of panel. Theexposed parts of the leads should be painted thoroughly with pre-servative i)aint. If the storage battery cabinet is near by the leads, itcan be carried directly co it; but if any considerable distance separatesthese apparatus their battery leads should be lead down to the floorand then to the battery cabinet in the same manner as to the panel.
