ty cells comprise these batteries, 10 cells on one end being con-trolled by a 10-point end-cell switch, so that any number of cells from50 to GO can be charged or discharged as desired. This enables anynumber of cells or the required voltage to be thrown on the telauto-graph lines, which usually operate at about 115 volts. The F-typebatteries are usually installed in lead-lined wood tanks, on a suitablewooden rack designed to carry the weight and atford the requiredinsulation. Figure 13 illustrates a typical telautograph storage-bat-tery installation, and shows the cabling for the end cells from therack nearest the wall. Inasmuch as the usual post poAver availableis at a potential of 110 volts, it is necessary to increa.se this to as muchas 170 volts (see preceding instruction) to charge the 60 cells of 54 ELECTRICAL INSTRUMENTS U. S. SIGNAL CORPS. telautograph battery. This is done by the use of motor generatorsor boosters, which increase or alter the voltage of the charging circuit.
