Philadelphia Rapid Transit Hose Bridge—Details of Construction. of interesting design. Reference to the line engraving willshow that the bridge has a total length of 22 feet 7 incheswith a rise at the center of eight inches. The resultingincline is so slight that a car can easily pass over the bridge,even though the condition of the rails may be exceptionallybad. Structurally, the bridge comprises a cast sectional framewith two incline points for each rail, and a center top rail mate weights of the various parts are as follows: Manganesesteel points, 150 pounds each; malleable iron centers, 150pounds each; center sections of rail head, 75 pounds each. An accompanying illustration shows one of these bridgesin actual service during a fire in the business district ofPhiladelphia. The two halvesof the bridge are joined by seven tie rods.
