is made of structuralsteel angle, with an oak tread. Each locomotive is equipped with tour GE-73 direct-current!jOO-volt railway motors and the Sprague-General Electrictype M control. The maximum drawbar pull which one ofthese locomotives will exert up to the slipping point of thewheels is about 15.000 pounds, with about 50 per centoverload on the motors. Each locomotive hat sufficient powerto start a 500-ton train on a level track, or a 200-ton train ona 2 per cent grade, and it is capable of hauling a 300-ton trainat a maximum speed of 15 miles an hour on level track, with500 volts pressure on the trolley wire. The motors are the box frame type, which type gives amaximum capacity in a minimum space and permits of usinglarge bearings with a superior method of lubrication, resultingin a very long life of bearings. The motor axle bearings are 5% inches in diameter andthe motors are jirovided with 73-tooth gears and 17-toothpinions. The control equipment is the standard Sprague-General

Beforethe concrete was placed sections of 4 and 6 inch wrought-ironpipe were placed to make vertical opening for carrying theelectric wires to the controllers. Heavy push-pole pockets areplaced at each corner of the underframing and heavy grabirons at each corner and also at the ends. The body bolsters are 10 by 1 inch trussed plates, wellsecured to I-beams. The body, except the cab, is made of %-inch steel plate,substantially fastened to the bottom by heavy angles. Thecab is located in the center and is 9 feet long and the fullwidth of the car, constructed of oak and ash. It has a slidingdoor on each side, 2 feet 6 inches wide, with a large stationaryglass at the top. The trucks are the Illinois Traction Companys standard4-wheel swing motion M. C.
