theNorthwestern Elevated Railroad, Chicago, has recently hadbuilt by the American Car & Foundry Company 40 trail cars.The design of the new cars is such that they can readily beconverted into motor cars. The structural steel underframeshave been designed with that end in view. Accompanyingillustrations reproduced from working drawings and photo- nels, wood filled, extending the full length of the car and beingcontinuous through the body bolsters with riveted connectionsto the end sill channels and plates. The cross members are3-inch 4-pound channels secured by riveted connections. Thesecross channels are spaced about 4S inches apart. The endsills are formed of a bent 8-inch 11.25-pound channel iron withits edges turned in and mitered with the ends of the side sillchannels. The sills are filled with yellow pine, except theend sills, which are filled with white oak. The body bolsters are made of two 9 by % inch soft steelplates.
