hat should one motor or any part of one-halfof the equipment become damaged, the car can then be oper-ated as a 2-motor equipment by throwing one blade of a doubleknife disconnecting switch. The actual control apparatus ispractically standard throughout. These are the first GeneralElectric equipments ever put in operation with two compen-sators. The compensators are oil-cooled and are provided withtaps to give 600, 450, 400, 340, 280 and 113 volts. The 600-volttaps are used only on the auxiliary circuits. Each car is equipped with two trolleys of the pantagraphtype. • The trolleys are constructed with steel pans, this ma-terial having been found to give greater satisfaction thaneither copper or aluminum. The car bodies were built by the St. Louis Car Companyand resemble very closely the standard Pullman car as usedin steam road service. Each car has separate accommoda-tions for white and colored people. The combination passen-ger and smoking car has a seating capacity of 64 persons.

One of these generators is direct connected to a 1,450-horsepower hydraulic turbine at one end of the shaft and to a750-kilowatt 60-cycle 2300-volt three-phase generator at theother end, both of the units being mounted on a common base.Should there be insufficient water to operate the turbine, the60-cycle generator will be run as a motor. The other 25-cyclemachine is coupled to a water turbine, and also to a 750-kilo-watt direct-current generator, the latter machine being usedas a motor in the event of low water.
