Electric Railway Review, November, 1906, page 893),have been generally discussed in the technical press, but littlehas been said about the rolling stock to be used. Indesigning the cars for this service the engineers have hadthree requirements constantly in mind: First—The car must be absolutely fireproof. Second—Doors must be arranged so that passengers mayenter and leave with least delay. Third—The weight must be kept as low as is consistentwith safety. Fireproof Materials. In order to make the car absolutely fireproof unusualprecautions have been taken. The entire car body is madeof steel, including doors, roof and headlining. The floor ismade of monolith cement, laid on steel, with ^-inch finishof carborundum cement, which is used as a substitute formaple strips. The seat cushions and backs are covered witha metal fabric instead of with rattan. All insulated wiresare covered with an asbestos braid and are placed in ironconduit pipes. In order to facilitate rapid movement of passengers, thecar is designed as indicated in the illustration, with wide centerdoors, side seats, and an unobstructed passageway betweenthe car platforms and the interior of the car. This arrange-ment minimizes the time of station stops without sacrifice of carrying capacity. At the terminals the cars will dis-charge passengers on one side to an incoming platform andwill receive passengers on the opposite side from a specialoutgoing platform. These provisions are particularly neces-sary owing to the density of traffic and the close headway oftrains during the rush hours. Reduction in Weight.
