Text Appearing Before Image:
h it is returned to thepressure tank. The first installation lacked proper in-sulation between plungers and platforms, and in wetweather the latter were too hot for comfort, whilethe heavy oil employed stiffened up so in cold weatherthat it literally gummed the game. These troubleswere easily remedied, however, and the cars have beenexceedingly satisfactory ever since. Equipment of the Tower Car or Wagon Whether or not the platform shall be of the overhangtype depends upon the nature of the service. An over-hung platform allows work to be done with wagon orcar clear of the track involved, and causes the least dis-turbance to traffic, particularly if rotated by power. Itadds greatly to the weight, however, for it must havefar more rigid and substantial support. For work inlarge cities the best combination is usually found tobe a square-platform emergency wagon working di-rectly beneath the trouble, and an overhung platformcar, which, however, also works under the trouble ifpracticable.
Text Appearing After Image:
OVERHEAD CONSTRUCTION—INTERIOR OF CONNECTICUT COM-PANY TOWER CAR; OPPOSITE END TO BENCH Tower equipment ranges from a light extension lad-der, a pair of heavy bolt cutters for strand and trolleywire, a few small coils of strand and trolley, and achest carrying some hand tools, ears, hangers and insu-lators, this being pretty close to the irreducible mini-mum of a light emergency wagon, up to a car installa-tion that is a cross between a general store and amachine shop—and for the high-pressure repair andrenewal work of the larger cities there is none too much. For example a recent medium-sized car has the follow-ing normal equipment: Pole-framing tools: Axes, draw-knives, plane, chisels, saws, braces and bits, etc. Pole-setting tools: Picks, shovels, bars, pike-poles, chains, blocks and falls, etc. Overhead tools: Sampson grips, monkey and Stilsonwrenches, heavy bolt-cutters, hammers, soldering pot, etc. Overhead material: Ears, hangers, pull-overs, strain in-sulators, splices, ancho
