All power is ob-tained from the trolley feeders. Only two line wires areused. A contactor of the pendulum type is also used forthe United States Electric Signal Companys signals.In the car-counting type the contactor operates to set thesignals to display a single red light and below it a reddisk behind plain glass for opposing movements and awhite light in combination with a rotating disk for follow-ing movements. Light Signal with Permissive Indication, Union TractionCompany of Indiana vvhen operated to display its indication is rotated on ahorizontal axis to present its flat surface to view and issimultaneously illuminated by an incandescent lamp con-tained in the semaphore case. The permissive indication for a car entering an un-occupied block is by the display of one of the white disks.The permissive indication for following movements is ashifting of the indication from one side to the other foreach car entering the block. Interlocking control of thesignals, one at each end of the block, is obtained bycircuits operating through two line wires. The Ward signal, which was placed in operationsome two years ago, has a novel contactor which isoperated by the raising of the trolley wire which occursas the trolley wheel passes along it.
