re good joints and perfect a lignment.Plate 13 is an illustration of the rolled steel frame, the struct-ural steel frame and the cast iron frame with channel ends. It willbe noted that these types of frames are solid and that the motors,journal boxes and other parts of the equipment are quite inaccess-ible. The Baldwin Y/estinghouse Co. has recently perfected an S+eqm open frame, built similar to the frame of aAlocomoLive (see Plate14) and have used cast steel for the material. This makes apractically unbreakable frame, and furthermore makes all parts ofthe machine more accessible through the openings in the frame.To eliminate the weakness of the bar under the journal springs,a pedestal construction has been resorted to with a yoke underthe bar. This gives stiffness and eliminates this point of weak-ness which formerly existed in cast iron frames, where it wasnecessary to have a space underneath the top of the casting andover the journal for the journal springs.
